The Green's policy towards fishing |
|

A lot of people seem to hate/strongly oppose the Greens party because they think that their fishing will be compromised by the Greens. Well after reading the Greens environmental and Natural resource policies I would like to disagree with this view.
http://greens.org.au/policies: have a good look as I imagine that you will all be interested to read their policies.
Of course what they say now might be different to their actions; but as you should be able to see under a Green government the fishing should improve.
Perhaps, the Green zones would be unpopular (as they seem to be now) but the area that surrounds a marine national park will always fish better than areas where there is large fishing pressures. I live to the right of a Marine National park called the Bunurong Marine National park which is fantastic because the fishing around it is amazing. The... [Read More]

Commercial Pipi Harvesting |
|
Jul 23, 2008 - 11:11 AM - by straddie

DPI have recieved multiple aplications for permits to commercially harvest pipis and other shell fish along the southern Queensland coast.
http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/7653.html
Of the 2 applications already recieved one is wanting to harvest 10 tonnes and the other 16 tonnes per year.
There is NO RESEARCH whatsoever behind these applications and the fisheries sustainability is unknown as well as its possible impact on fish species which are dependant on these shellfish for food. The other areas where pipi collection has occured commercially in NSW and SA has seen stocks collapse within a short period of time. This will be a gold rush at the prices they are getting for pipis at the moment and by the time they work out whether it is sustainable will be too late. Have your say folkes,
Please submit written comments to DPI&F Fisheries Resource... [Read More]

Here comes Ethanol |
|
Jul 05, 2008 - 12:32 PM - by Chris Ryan

An excerpt from a press release from Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry The Honourable Desley Boyle.
“The Bligh Government is committed to introducing a five percent ethanol mandate in Queensland by 2010 and if this can be delivered earlier the Government will do so - but not to the disadvantage of Queenslanders.
Now most of us know ethanol and boats are a bad idea but this is pushing a massive issue on us. Outboard & inboard fuel hoses may not be ready for ethanol NOR are a lot of the fuel tanks in boats. In the USA, fibreglass tanks and some plastic tanks are leaking and causing boats to explode. There is a civil lawsuit underway in California against the Government due to the mandated ethanol in the fuel by the boating lobby and those affected by this.
The shelf life for ethanol blends is shorter and a lot of boats not... [Read More]

Bad PR for fishermen on the 6pm news |
|
Jul 17, 2008 - 7:47 PM - by M62

Some bad PR for anglers on the news tonight, both 7 & 9 covered it. Seems some dills went to gaff a Grey Nurse Shark off Byron recently and somehow managed to release the shark with the gaff still in its mouth. Looked to be a gaff with a 2 or 3 foot handle that had worked it's way into the gut, about 1 foot of the handle was sticking out through the sharks mouth stopping it from closing its jaws. Divers and Seaworld staff traped and sedated the shark then a vet removed the gaff, he said it looked like it had been there for a couple of weeks. Some pretty good footage of the vet removing the gaff actually but bad PR for us.
Also on the news was some footage of an unmanned centre console doing circles off a Gold Coast beach. Said the fishermen were knocked out by a wave then rescued by surfers and swimmers had to be cleared from the water because of the runnaway boat. All ended well and I know accidents happen when it makes the news????
