Jack Alvey was awarded a gold medal by the International Casting Federation for his record cast of 671 feet 6 inches with a 2 oz. weight. For this cast, Jack used the Alvey Model 650A5 Side Cast Reel.

Alvey Reels unique casting system allows you to place long, well directed casts to the outer banks or cast baits, even without lead, to the fish lurking close to the shore. You will cast without fear of overrun or backlash, as such troubles are not encountered when using an Alvey Reel.

Step 1 Put left-hand fingers on spool lip and thumb on release lever. Press lever and turn spool. Holding line with Index finger.
Step 2 Bring spool full quarter turn until open faced casting position is reached.
Step 3 Swap index finger with thumb. Restrain line with thumb on spool.
Step 4 Hold the rod over your shoulder with the reel facing upward and the left arm held high. Stand with your body at right angles to the eventual direction of the cast. Good balance and firm footing are essential; weight is on the rear leg. The right hand should be gripping the rod blank at the point where you get maximum leverage for your size and the length rod being used. Allow a line drop of approximately 4 to 6 feet between the rod tip and the bait or lure, to absorb the shock absorb the shock of the cast. With the rod tip low to the ground the arc of swing will be maximised and more continuous power can be applied before the rod reaches the line release position.
Step 5 To cast, punch hard with the right arm and pull downward with the left in one smooth continuous movement. Sufficient force should be used to have the rod well bent as the cast is made.
Step 6 During the cast transfer your body weight from the rear leg to the front leg to increase the power applied. Be sure not to exaggerate this movement and cause over balancing. Follow through, releasing the line, and aim rod in direction of cast.
Step 7 Finish of the casting action should have brought the rod butt beside the left leg, but clear of any clothing that may impede the stripping line.
Step 8 As line is going out, brace the rod butt against your body and move your left hand to the base of the spool to control casting distances and stop the line when the bait or lure hits the water. Your right hand can now be slid down the rod to a more comfortable position.
Step 9 When the cast is complete, turn the spool back to the retrieve position, then hold the rod foregrip with your left hand, your right hand working the reel handle. The the line can be slipped into the open runner to keep close to your left forefingers for level winding onto the spool, and for detecting bites and bottom contours.
